第4章 聚会多多

There are various parties in tHe"states and they are often held for specific purposes, such as birthdays, graduations or other holidays.Dress for parties can be from casual to formal, and topics of conversation will vary depending on the purpose of the party. It is a time to get together with friends.

If you are invited by someone to have dinner with his or her family, It"s common to arrive on time or ten minutes early, but not more than ten or fifteen late. Should circumstances cause you to arrive more than 15 minutes late, you should call your host and explain that you have been delayed, letting them know How"soon to expect you.

邀请须知

一般说来,英美人对于正式的活动都事先发出邀请。但属于日常生活中非正式的社交活动,如节假日或周末聚会、野餐、外出就餐等,邀请者往往通过电话或见面时口头邀请的方式告知客人,邀请者使用的语言也属于非正式语体,表达方式也因人因事而异。

当别人邀请你吃饭、参加晚会或者看电影等,如果这正合你的心意,当然欣然接受,表示感谢。

拒绝邀请时,则要婉言谢绝。断然拒绝在西方被认为是粗鲁无礼的。应先表示自己很愿意接受邀请,说“I"d love to.”然后话锋一转道出拒绝的原因,如“But I have to take care of my daughter.”万一找出不理由,可以编造一个善意的谎言(a white lie),以免伤害邀请者的感情。

Champagne 香槟酒

早在两千多年前,法国香槟地区就开始种植葡萄和酿制葡萄酒了。那时酿制的葡萄酒很差,它被一位修道士丹佩里农放进了酒窖。第二年春天,当他把那瓶酒取出时,发现瓶内酒色清澈,明亮诱人,一摇“砰”的一声,酒喷出了瓶口,好香啊!大家争着品尝新酒,那真是mellow(香醇可口)。人们奔走相告,并为其取名为“爆塞酒”、“魔鬼酒”。后来,人们用产地的名字把它命名为champagne(香槟酒)。

告别的中西文化

人生聚散交替,见面之后终要分手。在中国文化中,客人要走了,主人总是一再挽留,常常要说“时间还早呢,吃了饭再走吧”等。当客人真的要走了,主人一直送到门外,且目送客人远去,有时甚至送客人到车站,直到客人上车。

而在西方文化中,告别时奉行的是主随客便,强调的是尊重对方。客人要告辞,一般会视实际情况而定,主人不会刻意挽留。互相道声“Goodbye”或“Good night”之后,客人出了门,主人的门便立即关上了。这和我们中国人的习惯是完全不一样的,我们不要误认为主人不热情。
