鹰是食肉的猛禽，嘴弯曲锐利，脚爪具有钩爪，性凶猛，食物包括小型哺乳动物、爬行动物、其他鸟类以及鱼类，白天活动。
鹰的视力相当敏锐，从天空上可以发觉地面的小动物。肌肉非常强有力，大型鹰两脚甚至可以将一头小鹿的脊椎骨折断，可以携带一头几十斤重的羊飞行。
鹰由于其凶猛，飞行起来非常壮观，所以自古以来就被许多部落和国家作为勇猛、权力、自由和独立的象征，中国古代龙的形象也是采用了鹰的脚爪，古代埃及和希腊传说中守护宝藏的怪物“格里芬”也是鹰头狮身的形象。
