在美国，看病、化验检查、住院手术都必须提前预约（advance reservation）。在美国无论是小诊所（The Little CIinic）还是大医院都没有挂号室（Registered office），想看病都得预约，急诊（emergency treatment）除外。
在美国，医疗机构（MedicaI Institutions）分为四类：医生诊所（doctors'offices）、门诊医院、专科医院（speciaI hospitaI）和综合医院（generaI hospitaI）。无论是哪类诊所医院，看病必须通过电话预约。
美国的医生是自由之身，可以在好几个诊所、医院挂职。在美国看病，你是选择专家，而不是选择哪家医院。所以，即使是第一次看门诊，人生地不熟，你也得打电话给医生预约。如果不知道找哪位大夫，你可以让朋友推荐、看黄页或单位提供。
爽约，信用记录会“记仇”
在美国，信用记录（credit record）非常重要。如果你经常爽约（break an appointment）的话，那么就说明你这个人信用很低，这有可能计入你的信用记录，那么申请银行信用卡、社保服务、汽车保险等都会面临困难。所以，在美国预约挂号后，患者很少爽约。
如果有事不能赴约，患者可以提前一天或几天取消，重新预约（rebook）。美国的预约挂号不是抢号占号，而是占上时间。
