Oregon hollygrape is a low－growing shrub from 2to 5feet in height，resembling the holly of the Eastern States．The leaves are divided like those of an ash；the five to nine leaflets（小叶）from 2to 3inches long and about 1inch wide are evergreen，thick，leathery（似皮革的，坚韧的），smooth，and shining on the upper surface with marginal（记在页边的，边缘的）spines．The numerous small yellow flowers appear in April and May and are borne in erect clusters．The fruit consists of a cluster of blue berries．The rootstock（初生主根）and roots are more or less knotty［（木材等）多结的，多节的］，about an inch or less in diameter，with tough yellow wood and brownish bark．

Leaf：Pinnately compound（oddly），alternate，persistent；10to 18inches long，11to 21broadly lanceolate（矛尖形的，披针状的）leaflets each 2to 3inches long．Leaflets are dark，glossy green above and paler green below；thick，waxy cuticles（表皮）and spined teeth along their margins．Lateral（横（向）的，侧面的）leaflets are opposite and sessile（［植］（花，叶等）无柄的，固着的），while the terminal（末端的）leaflet has a petiole（叶柄，柄部）；leaflets lack a distinct midrib（［植］（叶的）中脉）．
Flower：Monoecious（［植］雄雌同株的，雄雌同体的），perfect，small bright yellow flowers are borne in long，upright racemes（总状花序）．
Fruit：Small（3／16inch），dark blue berries，edible（可食用的），but sour．
Twig：Unbranched；compound leaves emerge directly from main stem．Main stem is stout and brown；leaves are clustered at the terminal end．Lanceolate bud scales persist for several years．
Bark：Reddish brown，scaly and rough．
Form：A short，erect，unbranched evergreen shrub seldom over 3feet
Habitat and range：This shrub is native in woods in rich soil among rocks from Nebraska to the Pacific Ocean，but it is especially abundant in Oregon and northern California．

The flag of Oregon is the only state flag with different pictures on each side．On the reverse appears a beaver the state animal．Both sides have a field of navy blue with design in gold．The front picture includes a heart shaped shield with an eagle on top，surrounded by thirty－three stars．（The number of states in 1859．）The scene on the shield shows the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean，mountains，forests and a covered wagon．A plow，wheat and pickax（撬）represent farming and mining．Of the two ships：The one leaving is a British ship and the one arriving is a United States ship representing trade．The eagle represents the United States．On a banner are the words “The Union”representing support for the United States．Finally the flag is emblazoned（用纹章装饰，颂扬）with the words “State of Oregon”above the picture and the date of statehood “1859”below．
