乌龟走得慢，兔子老是嘲笑它。
兔子轻蔑地笑着说：“我真不明白你干吗费那么大劲儿走路呢，等你到了那儿，不论什么事都结束了。”
乌龟笑笑说：“我可能走得慢，可我敢打赌，我会比你先到。如果你想比赛，我会向你证明这一点。”
兔子觉得自己可以轻而易举地取胜，就同意了。她尽力飞奔，乌龟在后面慢而稳地走着。
那时是中午，烈日炎炎，天气很热，不久，兔子就感到有点困了。
她想：“我打算在树篱下打个盹儿，即使乌龟跑到我前头去，我也会一下就赶上他的。”
兔子躺在背阴的地方，很快睡着了。
乌龟在中午的太阳下慢慢地往前走。
“看不见老乌龟的影子，我看，我即使打个盹儿也没关系。”
她出发了，毫不费劲地穿过矮矮的草丛和长着的庄稼，跳过小沟和荆棘，不久就转过最后一道弯。她停了一下，看看比赛的终点。啊，乌龟离终点线不到一码啦，他一步一步慢慢地、平稳地走着，离终点越来越近。
兔子向前一跃，飞奔过去。但为时已晚，当她喘着气冲过终点线时，乌龟已比她先到了。
“你现在相信我的话了吧？”乌龟问。兔子上气不接下气，答不上来。慢而稳也可赢得胜利。

The Lion，the Robberand the Traveller
While a lion was standing over a bullock，which he had brought down to the ground，a robber came up，and demanded a share．“I would give it to you，”said the lion，“were you not in the habit of taking without leave”，and so he repulsed the rogue．
By chance，a harmless traveller came to the same spot，and on seeing the wild beast，retraced his steps；on which the lion kindly said to him：“You have nothing to fear；boldly take the share which is due to your modesty．”Then having divided the carcase，he sought the woods to make room for the man．
