ThereisalegendthatStBoniface,anEnglishmonk,cameuponagroupofpagansgatheredaroundanoaktreewhowerepreparingtosacrificeachildtotheGodThor。Inordertostopthesacrifice,andsavethechild‘slife,StBonifaceissaidtohavefelledthetreewithoneblowofhisfist。Lateron,afirtreegrewinplaceoftheoakandthis,StBonifacetoldthepagans,wastheTreeofLifeandrepresentedtheChristChild。
Legendalsosuggeststhat,inthelate16thcentury,MartinLuther(thefounderoftheProtestantreligion)wasthefirsttodecorateanindoortreewithcandleswhenheattemptedtorecreatethestarsshiningoveraforestofevergreens。

PrinceAlbert,husbandofQueenVictoria,iscreditedwithbeingresponsibleforintroducingthecustomoftheChristmastreetotheBritishpublicbydecoratingthefirstEnglishChristmastreeatWindsorCastlein1841usingcandles,sweets,fruitandgingerbread。
ThepopularityoftheChristmastreegrewinBritainduringthefirsthalfofthe20thcentury,withtreesbecomingbiggerandmoreelaboratelydecoratedwithbells,baublesandtinsel。However,theonsetoftheSecondWorldWarresultedinabanoncuttingdowntreesfordecorationandpeopleresortedtohavingsmall,artificialtabletoptreesbearinghomemadedecorations。ThesewereoftentakendownintotheairraidshelterswhenthesirenssoundedtoprovideabitofChristmascheer!
Thisallchangedfollowingthewar,andlargetreeswereerectedinmanypublicplacestocelebrateChristmas。ThemostfamousoftheseisthetreeinTrafalgarSquare,LondonwhichisanannualgiftfromtheNorwegiangovernmenttogivethanksforthehelptheyreceivedfromBritainduringthewar。
