Life is a battle from cradle to grave.
If life is a tree，
Joy is but its leaf.
Leaves bud；leaves grow；leaves fall…
If life is a tree，
Its roots are sorrows…
Long after the leaves are fallen，
Long after the boughs are bare，
The roots cling fast，
Deep in the Earth-Mother's bosom.

人生是一场从生到死的战斗。
浮生若比无知木，
叶赐人欢乐，
乍看新绿上梢头，
又恨凋零憔悴可怜秋。
浮生若比无知木，
根是人愁绪，
伤怀叶叶尽辞枝，
根且深埋地下苦相持。
注：作者陈达是最早在美国杂志发表英文诗的中国人，出生于中国湖南省。1920年赴美，l926年毕业于内布拉斯加大学，后在威斯康星大学研究院进修。他是中国学生当时在英所创办英文《留美学生月报》编辑之一。后他在许多国内大专院校任教，桃李满天下。

bud和bosom：“把……消灭在摇篮中”，就是用bud这个词来表达。比如：She wanted to be an actress，but her father soon nipped that idea in the bud. （她想当演员，但她父亲一知道这个想法就阻止住了。）“永远不要施恩于忘恩负义之人”，就是Never cherish a serpent in your bosom.
