A preacher is buying a parrot。
“Are you sure it does not scream, yell,or swear?”asked the preacher。
“Oh absolutely。It is a religious parrot”the storekeeper assures him。
“Do you see those strings on his legs? When you pull the right one,he recites the lord’s prayer, and when you pull on the left he recites the23rd Psalm。”
“Wonderful!”says the preacher,“but what happens if you pull both strings?”
“I fall off my perch。You stupid fool!”screeched the parrot。

贝恩(Aphra Behn)就用过这句话,而这句话则出自另一个成语:as sick as a parrot with a rubber beck(像一只喙软如胶的鹦鹉那么懊丧)。 所以,sick as a parrot就是“很伤心”或“很失望”,如:He was crossed in love and became sick as a parrot。
