《扬基歌》这首歌在美国所有歌曲中大概是最著名的了。全世界的人只要收听过美国之音的人都熟悉它。因为这首歌的曲调是美国之音的开始曲。
美国独立战争时期，英国军队唱《扬基歌》是嘲笑美国的造反者。歌中Doodle是“蠢人”的意思。在殖民地时期纽约人和英国士兵用Yankee一词以嘲笑的口吻指北方的新英格兰人。独立战争时期，新英格兰人采用Yankee一词自豪地称呼他们自己。1781年10月19日，康韦尔将军指挥下的英军在弗吉尼亚的约克郡打了最后一仗后，向华盛顿将军投降时，美国军队就唱着这首歌回敬英国军队。从此这首歌变成了一首著名的美国爱国歌曲，并在世界各地广为流传。但是，这首歌的歌词大约有三百多种，或者说有三百多段。我们这里选的是比较传统，比较流行的一种。它描述了一个农村小伙子观看革命军集合时的情景。歌曲曲调比较简单，轻快，歌词诙谐有趣，形象地反映了美国人民乐观、开朗的性格。
