“Hush!” said Mr. Adams, raising his trembling hand. “All be quiet for a moment, Agatha!” he called as loudly as he could. “Listen to me ” During the following silence they could hear the faintfaint adj.虚落地, 衰弱的, 软弱的 sound of the child crying in the dark vault.

“My darling!” cried the mother. “She will die of fright! Open the door! Oh, break it open! Cant you, men, do something?”

“There isnt a man nearer than Little Rock who can open that door,” said Mr. Adams in a trembling voice. “My God! Spencer, what shall we do! That child—she cant stand it long in there. There isnt enough air, and, besides, shell go mad from frightfright n.

Agathas mother beat the door of the vault wildly with her hands. Somebody suggested dynamite. Annabel turned to Jimmy, her large eyes full of horrorhorror n.惊骇, 恐怖, 惨事, 极端厌恶 , but not yet despairing. To a woman nothing seems impossible to the powers of the man she worships.

“Cant you do something, Ralph—try, wont you?” He looked at her with a strange, soft smile on his lips and in his eyes.

“Annabel,” he said, “give me that rose you are wearing, will you?”

Hardly believing that she heard him aright she unpinnedunpin vt.拔去别针, 拔掉闩 the flower from her dress, and gave it to Jimmy. He put it into his vest pocket, threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt sleeves. With that act Ralph D. Spencer passed away and Jimmy Valentine took his place.

“Get away from the door, all of you,” he commanded, shortly.

He put his suitcase of the table and opened it. From that time on he seemed to be unconsciousunconscious adj.不省人事, 未发觉的 of the presence of anyone else. He took out he shining, strange instruments quickly and orderly, whistling softly to himself as he always did when he was at work. In a deep silence and immovableimmovable adj.固定的, 不动的 the others watched him dumbfoundeddumbfound v.

In a minute Jimmys drill got into the steel door. In ten minutes—breaking his own burglariousburglarious adj.夜盗的, 窃盗的 record—he opened the door. Agathas mother rushed into the vault and took the child, who was very weak, but safe, into her arms.

Jimmy Valentine put on his coat and walked toward the front door. As he went it seemed to him he heard a faraway voice that he once knew call “Ralph”. But he didnt stop for an instantfor an instant

At the door a big man stood in his way.

“Hello, Ben!” said Jimmy, still with his strange smile. “At last youre here, are you? Well, lets go. I dont think it matters much, now.”

And then Ben Price acted rather strangely.

“I guess youre mistaken, Mr. Spencer,” he said. “I dont believe I recognizerecognize vt. Your buggys waiting for you, isnt it?”

And Ben Price turned and walked down the street.
