New York University (NYU) is a private， nonsectarian American research university based in New York City. NYU"s main campus is situated in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. Founded in 1831， NYU is one of the largest private nonprofit institutions of American higher education. The university held its first classes in rented rooms in Lower Manhattan in 1832， and officially changed its name (the University of the City of NewYork) to New York University in 1896. NYU is a progressive urban private school that prides itself on providing the city as its true campus. New York City itself is essential to academic life. A world center of finance， media， and the arts， it offers internships， part-time jobs， and research experiences that pair course work with practical experience， not to mention world-renowned theatre， dance， music， f ilms， museums， and galleries. Famous school： New York University offers degrees in a wide range of disciplines for both undergraduates and graduates. It is most famous for its film， theater and dance departments at the Tisch School of the Arts. Tisch School of the Arts prepares students for careers in film， photography， television， drama， dance and music， at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Tisch students can take advantage of the diverse performing arts community in New York to gain experience and build a network outside of the classroom.
