The University of Wisconsin-Madison

(also known as University of Wisconsin, or regionally as UW-Madison, or

Madison) is a public research university located in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. Founded when Wisconsin achieved statehood in 1848, UW-Madison is the official state university of Wisconsin, and the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. It was the first public university established in Wisconsin and remains the oldest and largest public university in the state. It became a land-grant institution in 1866. The university contains 20 different colleges and schools, including the College of Letters and Science, the School of Medicine and Public Health, the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and more. Together, these colleges and schools offer more than 150 academic and pre-professional departments and programs.

This includes Agricultural and Life Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Human Ecology, Letters and Science, Nursing and Pharmacy. Wisconsin idea: The school"s legacy of public service was founded on the"Wisconsin Idea"that education should influence and improve people"s lives beyond the classroom, which has led to strong ties with the university in its community, and throughout the world. For more than a century, the university system has been guided by the"Wisconsin Idea", a tradition first enunciated by University of Wisconsin President, Charles Van Hise, in 1904. Van Hise declared that he would "never be content until the beneficent influence of the university reaches every family in the state."
