Syracuse University (commonly referred to as Syracuse， or SU) is a private research university located in Syracuse， New York， United States. Its roots can be traced back to Genesee Wesleyan Seminary， founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1832， which also later founded Genesee College. Following several years of debate over relocating the college to Syracuse， the university was founded independent of the college in 1870.Since 1920， the university has identified itself as nonsectarian， although it maintains a relationship with The United Methodist Church. The campus is located in the University Hill neighborhood of Syracuse， east and southeast of downtown， on one of the larger hills. Its large campus features an eclectic mix of buildings， ranging from nineteenth-century Romanesque structures to contemporary buildings. Also called "North Campus"， the Main Campus contains nearly all academic buildings with its grass quadrangle， landscaped walkways， and outdoor sculptures， offers students the amenities of a traditional college experience. Approximately 2，500 students live on the South Campus， which is connected to the main campus by frequent bus service. Graduates of these and other schools have emerged to become leaders in their fields， including Vice President Joe Biden， Pulitzer prize -winning columnist William Safire， former anchor Ted Koppel， and many more.

System： SU is organized into 13 schools and colleges and offers 200 majors， with nationally recognized programs in information studies and library science， architecture， communications， business administration， public administration， arts and sciences， education， engineering and computer science， ecology， information studies， law， management， public affairs， and visual and performing arts， as well as graduate school and a college for part-time students. Syracuse boasts several prestigious， nationally recognized， and highly ranked schools and colleges. Among these are the College of Visual and Performing Arts， School of Architecture， L. C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science， School of Information Studies， Martin J. Whitman School of Management， and the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
