Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a private university located in the lively city of Worcester， Massachusetts， United States. Founded in 1865 in Worcester， WPI was one of the United States" first engineering and technology universities. Worcester Polytechnic Institute was the synthesis of the idealism of a self-made tinware manufacturer， John Boynton， and the highly specific ideas of Ichabod Washburn， owner of the world"s largest wire mill.Nowdays WPI is primarily an undergraduate focused institution， though expansion of graduate and research programs is a long-term goal. There are 25 WPI project centers throughout North America and Central America， Africa， Australia， Asia， and Europe.The university has also earned praise and attention for its project-based curriculum， small class sizes， and study-abroad opportunities. Individually designed (ID) majors combine technical and nontechnical areas of study already offered by Worcester Polytechnic Institute to construct a unique major with a specific career focus in mind. Students interested in pursuing ID majors work with their advisers and with the dean of the Global Studies Division to design a feasible program that can be carried out with the resources available at the university.

The WPI Bioengineering Institute is a significant contributor to Worcester"s growing biotechnology industry. Significant research in other fields such as metallurgy， health care， fuel cells， the learning sciences， applied mathematics and fire protection currently help establish WPI as an important， specialized research university.
Student organizations： Honorary societies and professional clubs at Worcester Polytechnic Institute allow students with specialized academic interests to meet， socialize， and collaborate on related activities.Scientific and technological clubs such as the Game Development Club and the Wireless Association provide forums for technological development in a social atmosphere. Members of Engineers without Borders work to develop environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects on local and global levels.
