《世界之巅》由卡伦·卡朋特演唱。卡伦于1983年去世之后，美国曾有人根据她的生平拍成一部《卡伦·卡朋特的故事》。影片里，她是正在唱《世界之巅》这首歌时，因体力不支，身体太虚弱，突然晕倒在舞台上。后被送往医院抢救，终因长时间患“神经性厌食症”，最终没能够挽救她年轻的生命。
《世界之巅》成了卡伦的绝唱。由于有了这段动人的情节，人们在听这首歌时，更加怀念这位天皇歌星了。
人在什么时候才能感到自己在世界之巅呢？大概是在最幸福的时候。那么，人何时最幸福？这首歌表达的是：有爱情时，人最幸福；有爱情时，人便产生站在世界顶端的感觉。世界的顶端是上帝为亚当和夏娃造的乐园。这个乐园和下边的世界都是上帝的创造物。歌中女主人公所咏唱的男子最接近天堂（You are the nearest thing to heaven that I have seen）。
