根据上下文猜测词义
在阅读过程中遇到生词是在所难免的，但一遇到生词就查词典是不可取的，况且考试时不允许使用词典。英文单词是可以分析的。一个单词一旦进入句子，便会与周围的词语发生这样或那样的联系，并受它们的制约。因此，我们完全可以根据上下文来猜测词义，这是一种积极有效的阅读策略。
我们通常利用两种上下文线索来猜测生词的含义。一是说明性线索，就是在生词的前后存在着说明、解释该生词的词语线索。如：W.ca.fee.acceleration.a.increas.i.speed.（生词acceleration的词义由a.increas.i.speed说明，解释为“加速”）。二是情景或逻辑线索。如：Th.weathe.wa.ver.hot.Th.swea.droppe.dow.hi.face.Hi.clothe.wer.we.a.i.h.ha.falle.int.th.water.（sweat可从这三句提供的情景推断出，是“汗水”的意思。）
