众神的报复
Ulysses and his crew(crew n.全体人员，（工作）队)now guided their ship out over the ocean，still intent on finding their way back to Ithaca.But they had no idea in which direction their homeland lay，and after they had wandered for a while，they came to the lonely island of Aeaea.Here they entered the harbour silently，and moored(moor n.沼地，荒野v.停泊，固定，系住)their ship by the shore.For two days and nights they remained on the beach，weary of the waves and grieving(grieve v.（使）悲痛，（使）伤心，忧伤)for their comrades lost.
尤利西斯和他的伙伴驾着船在海上漂流，努力找寻重返伊塔刻的路途。但他们完全迷失了方向，不知归向何方。在海上漂流一段时间，他们来到一个叫埃埃厄的孤岛。他们悄悄把船驶进港口，停靠下来。因为被海浪颠得疲惫不堪，又为失去伙伴悲恸不已，他们在海边休整了两天两夜。
At dawn on the third day，Ulysses climbed alone to the summit(summit n.顶点，最高阶层adj.政府首脑的)of a rock，and gazed out over the island.The county was almost entirely wooded，but in one place he could spy a wisp of smoke rising from what appeared to be a house.He returned to his men with news of what he had seen.
第三天的清晨，尤利西斯独自爬上一那个巨石，放眼观望整个岛屿：这个国家几乎全被树林覆盖，他发现一缕轻烟从一幢房子模样的地方升起。他回去告知同伴所看到的一切。
“Now，my men，”he cried，“it is clear that this island is not entirely without inhabitants.I propose to send out a party of men under the command of Eurylochus，to find out who lives in that house，and whether we may hope for hospitality.”
“伙伴们，”他说，“已很清楚，这个岛一定有居住者。我建议由欧律罗科斯率领一队人去看看谁住在那幢房子里，探听一下我们是否会被热情接待。”
At this a groan arose from the crew.“Remember Polyphemus.”said one，“and the land of the Laestrygones，where we lost so many of our friends！”
听完他的话，船员们在下面窃窃私语，有人说：“要记住波吕斐摩斯和莱斯特律戈涅斯人给我们的教训啊，在那里我们失去了许多朋友。”
“Do as I say.”returned Ulysses.“And you，Eurylochus，make haste and set forward with your party.”

Seeing that it was useless to argue with their leader，the chosen men set out under the command of Eurylochus，and were soon threading their way through the undergrowth and round the roots of the great trees.They came at last to a fine stone building in the middle of the forest，and paused at a little distance to gaze in wonder at the scene(scene n.现场，场面，情景，景色，[戏剧］一场，布景)before them.
那些被挑选出来的人都知道，与他们首领争辩纯属徒劳。于是随从欧律罗科斯出发了。他们疾速穿过大树脚下的灌木丛，抵达树林中部一座精美的石头宫殿。在离宫殿不远处他们停下来，注视着前面的情况。
“Dare we go forward？”whispered one.“It is a weird(weird adj.怪异的，超自然的，神秘的，不可思议的)habitation.”
“我们还能往前走吗？”其中一个低语道。“恐怕这是一个恐怖邪恶的住所。”
“Hist！”replied Eurylochus.“Something approaches through the bushes.”
“嘘！”欧律罗科斯回答，“什么东西正穿过丛林过来了。”
Then there ran out into the open a number of lions and wolves.The men screamed terror at the sight；however，the animals approached gently and stood on their hind legs，wagging their tails and licking the men‘s hands.
一会儿许多狮子和野狼跑出来，船员们一见马上惊恐地大叫起来。这群野兽却轻轻地走上前来，后腿直立，轻摇尾巴，舐舔着这些人的手。
“Begone！Be off with you！”cried Eurylochus，starting back.But a great wolf came up to him，and fawned and raising its front paws gazed sorrowfully into his eyes.
“滚开！不要靠近我！”欧律罗科斯大喊，忙着后退。一只巨狼正走近他，举起前爪，摇着尾巴，忧伤地注视着他的眼睛。
“There is something uncanny about them.”murmured Eurylochus，shuddering.“Let us go up to the house.”
“一定有什么可怕的事发生在它们身上，”欧律罗科斯不寒而栗地自语道，“让我们赶快进入宫殿。”
They stood in the doorway，and at once there fell on their ears the sound of a woman‘s singing.The men all shouted，and the singing immediately ceased.
他们站在门口，听到一个女人的歌声。这些船员大声呼喊，歌声随即停止。
The door opened.A beautiful woman，or rather goddess，stood in doorway，her hair was golden，and her robe of hyacinth blue was clasped with a golden clasp.She was the enchantress Circe，and she carried her enchantress‘s wand in her hand.
门开了，一位美丽的女人，一位貌似天仙的女人站在门口，她金色的头发，穿着蓝紫色饰着金扣的长袍。她就是手持魔杖的女妖喀耳刻。
“come in，my friends.”she said，and smiled at each of them in turn.“All mariners are welcome here.”So the men entered，except for Eurylochus who lingered behind in the doorway.
“进来吧，朋友们，”她说，微笑着依次招呼每一个人。“所有水手在我这里都受到欢迎。”于是所有的人都进了宫殿，除了欧律罗科斯逗留在门口。
“Take your seat on those couches，”continued Circe.“I myself will prepare you a meal.”Then she laid before each man a bowl of tempting food，into which she had secretly mixed a little of a strange drug.When they had finished eating，she rose and suddenly cried：“The pigs have eaten their fill！It is time for them to rest in their sties！Go，you”－here she struck one of the men with her wand－“and you”－she struck another－“and you，and you！”Each man，as the wand touched him，was at once transformed to a pig，with hieous snout and bristling back.“Begone into your sties！”Circe repeated，and she drove them into pigs‘sties on either side of the hall.then she stood back and laughed，well satisfied with the results of her magic.
“请各位在椅子上就座，”喀耳刻招呼着，“我来给你们准备吃的。”她在每人面前端上一盘诱人的食物，她已在其中调进了一种神奇的药物。当船员们用餐完毕，她站了起来，突然说：“猪仔已经吃饱！回猪圈休息吧！去，你。”——她用魔杖点了其中一个——“还有你”——她又点了另一位。——“还有你，还有你！”每位被魔杖触到的人即刻变成一个背上长着生硬的猪鬃、伸着长嘴的丑猪。“快进入你们的猪圈！”喀耳刻又命令一遍，把它们全部赶了进去，分站在猪圈的两侧。喀耳刻往后站了站，大笑起来，非常满意她的魔法产生的威力。
How the men grunted！They stared at one another，surprised at the sudden transformation；and each man，seeing the plight of his fellow，began to understand his own.Then they stood on their hind legs，and putting their cleft forefeet against the sties，they wept warm human tears.
这些人是怎样地在哭嚎！他们互相瞪眼，惊奇这突如其来的变化。看到同伴的处境，每个人都开始明白自己的惨状。他们后腿站立，伸着张裂的前腿踢蹬着猪圈，落下伤心的泪。
