The Halcyon Birds(2)

In the meanwhile Halcyone, ignorant of all these shipwreck, counted the days till her husband’s promised return. For her husband, who was no more, she prayed incessantlyincessantly adv. The goddess,at length, could not bear any longer to be pleaded with for one already dead, and to have hands raised to her altars that ought rather to be offering funeral rites. So,calling Iris, she said,“Iris, tell Somnus to send a vision to Halcyone,in the form of Ceyx,to make known to her the event.”

Thereupon Somnus sent one of his numerousnumerous adj.众多的,许多的,无数的sons,Morpheus—the most expert in counterfeiting forms of men,to perform the command of Iris.

Morpheus soon came to the Haemonian city, where he assumed the form of Ceyx.Pale like a dead man, naked,he stood before the couch of the wretched wife.Leaning over the bed, tears streaming from his eyes,he said,“Do you recognize your Ceyx, unhappy wife?Your prayers,Halcyone, availed me nothing.I am dead.No more deceive yourself with vain hopes of my return.”

Halcyone groaned and stretched out her arms in her sleep, striving to embrace his body, but grasping only the air,“Stay!”she cried. Her own voice awakened her.Staring up,she gazed eagerly around,to see if he was still present. When found him not,she smote her breast(breast n. 以胸对着,对付)and tore at her cope.“Halcyone is no more,”she cried,“she perished with her Ceyx.He is shipwrecked and dead.”

It was now morning. She went to the seashore and sought the spot where she last him,on his departure(departure n.启程,出发,离开).Looking out over the sea,she descries an indistinct object floating in the water. It is her husband!Stretching out her trembling hands towards it,she exclaims,“Oh,dearest husband,is it thus you return to me?”

She leaped upon the mole built out from the shore and she flew, striking the air with wings produced on the instant. As she flew, her throat poured forth sounds full of grief, and like the voice of one lamenting. When she touched the mute(mute n. 排泄)and bloodless body, she enfolded its beloved limbs with her new formed wings and tried to give kisses with her horny beak.By the pitying gods both of them were changed into birds.
