到晚间狗儿又来了。它把公主背到背上，带着她跑到兵士那儿去。这个兵士现在非常爱她。他还很想成为一位王子，娶了她呢。狗儿完全没有注意到，面粉已经从王宫那儿一直撒到了兵士那间屋子的窗上——它就是在这儿背着公主沿着墙爬进去的。清晨，国王和王后已经看得非常清楚，知道他们的女儿曾经到什么地方去过。他们把那个兵士抓来，关进牢里去了。他现在坐在牢里了。嗨，那里面可真够黑暗和闷人啦！人们对他说：“明天你将要上绞架了。”
It was not very pleasant news， and besides， he had left the tinderbox at the inn. In the morning he could see through the iron grating of the little window how the people were hastening out of the town to see him hanged， he heard the drums beating， and saw the soldiers marching. Every one ran out to look at them， and a shoemakers boy， with a leather apron and slippers on， galloped by so fast， that one of his slippers flew off and struck against the wall where the soldier sat looking through the iron grating.
这句话听起来可真不是好玩的，而且他把打火匣也忘在旅馆里。第二天早晨，他从小窗的铁栏杆里望见许多人涌出城来看他上绞架。他听到了鼓声，看到兵士们开步走。所有的人都在朝外面跑。有一个鞋匠的学徒在这些人中间。他还穿着皮围裙和一双拖鞋。他跑得那么快，连他的一双拖鞋也飞走了，撞到了一堵墙上。那个兵士就坐在那儿，在铁栏杆的后面朝外望。
“Hallo， you shoemakers boy， you need not be in such a hurry，” cried the soldier to him. “There will be nothing to see till I come， but if you will run to the house where I have been living， and bring me my tinderbox， you shall have four shillings， but you must put your best foot foremost.”
“喂，你这个鞋匠的小鬼！你不要这么着急呀！”兵士对他说。“在我没有到场以前，没有什么好看的呀。不过，如果你跑到我住的那个地方去，把我的打火匣取来，我可以给你四块钱。但是你得使劲地跑一会儿才行。”
The shoemakers boy liked the idea of getting the four shillings， so he ran very fast and fetched the tinderbox， and gave it to the soldier. And now we shall see what happened.
这个鞋匠的学徒很想得到那四块钱，所以抬起脚就跑，取来那个打火匣，交给这个兵士，现在，我们马上就可以知道事情将起一个什么样的变化。
Outside the town a large gibbetgibbet n.绞刑架v.绞刑 had been erected， round which stood the soldiers and several thousands of people. The king and the queen sat on splendid thrones opposite to the judges and the whole council.
在城外面，已经竖起来了一架高大的绞架。它的四周站着许多兵士和成千成万的老百姓。国王和王后，正对着审判官和全部陪审的人员，坐在一个华丽的王座上面。
The soldier already stood on the ladderladder n.梯子， 阶梯vi.袜子抽丝， 装设梯子， but as they were about to place the rope around his neck， he said that an innocent request was often granted to a poor criminal before he suffered death. He wished very much to smoke a pipe， as it would be the last pipe he should ever smoke in the world.
那个兵士已经站到梯子上来了。不过，当人们把绞索正要套到他的脖子上的时候，他说，一个罪人在接受他的审判以前，可以有一个无罪的要求，人们应让他得到满足：他很想抽一口烟，而且这可以说是他在这世界上最后抽的一口烟了。
The king could not refuse this request， so the soldier took his tinderbox， and struck fire， once， twice， thrice， and there in a moment stood all the dogs—the one with eyes as big as teacups， the one with eyes as large as millwheels， and the third， whose eyes were like towers. “Help me now， that I may not be hanged，” cried the soldier.
对于这个要求，国王不愿意说一个“不”字。所以兵士就取出了他的打火匣，擦了几下火。一——二——三！突然三只狗儿都跳出来了——一只眼睛有茶杯那么大，一只有水车轮那么大的眼睛——还有一只的眼睛简直就有圆塔那么大。“不要让我被绞死吧，请帮助我！”兵士说。
And the dogs fell upon the judges and all the councillorscouncillor n.议员， 评议员， seized one by the legs， and another by the nose， and tossed them many feet high in the air， so that they fell down and were dashed to pieces.
这时这几只狗儿就向法官和全体审判的人员扑去，拖着这个人的腿，咬着那个人的鼻子，把他们抛向空中有好几丈高，在他们落下来时都跌成了肉酱。
“I will not be touched，” said the king. But the largest dog seized him， as well as the queen， and threw them after the others. Then the soldiers and all the people were afraid， and cried， “Good soldier， you shall be our king， and you shall marry the beautiful princess.”
国王说：“不许这样对付我！”不过最大的那只狗儿还是拖住他和他的王后，把他们跟其余的人一起乱扔，所有的士兵都害怕起来，老百姓也都叫起来：“小兵，你来做咱们的国王吧！你来跟那位美丽的公主结婚吧！”
So they placed the soldier in the kings carriage， and the three dogs ran on in front and cried “Hurrah！” and the little boys whistled through their fingers， and the soldiers presented arms. The princess came out of the copper castle， and became queen， which was very pleasing to her. The wedding festivities lasted a whole week， and the dogs sat at the table， and stared with all their eyes.
就这样，大家就把这个兵士拥进国王的四轮马车里去了。那三只狗儿就在他面前跳来跳去，同时高呼着：“万岁！”小孩子用手指吹起口哨来，士兵们敬起礼来。那位公主走出她的铜宫，做了王后，感到非常满意。举行了足足有八天的结婚典礼。那三只狗儿也上桌子坐了，把他们的眼睛睁得比什么时候都大。
