Responding to Cheng Jin’s Poem on Autumn Night

Responding to Cheng Jin’s Poem on Autumn Night
Han Hong
Early to greet the cold wind are the long bamboos;
O’erflowing the hollow city is the pale moonlight.
Across the Starry River flies a lone wild-goose;
From thousand homes resound washing-mallets at night.
The season must be late from all that we can see;
My thoughts of you have kept me sleepless and much stirred.
I have long chanted your nice verses in high glee
Till to my surprise the crowing of rooks is heard.
