Ascending a Tower
Du Fu
With a saddened heart I see near the tower flowers in full bloom,
For I ascend it at a time when our state is in disastrous gloom.
The spring splendor of the Jin River has come forth with earth
and sky;
The world changes all the time like clouds o’er the Jade Mount
drifting high.
As the fixed North Pole our royal court will always stable remain,
From all attacks the robbers beyond the West Mountain should
refrain.
The sight of the temple of the conquered King of Shu makes me
sigh;
To sing at sunset in praise of his minister I’d rather try.
