Passing by the Place Where Jia Yi Lived
Liu Changqing
When Jia Yi, the scholar, was in exile, he had lived right here for
three years.
Ever since then, his tragic story has moved many visitors to tears.
Alone I look in autumn grass for the house whose owner died
long before,
But I can see in the setting sun only chilly trees and nothing more.
Emperor Wen Di, though a wise ruler, favoured you with little
grace yet;
Could the senseless Xiang River be touched by your deep grief
for the great poet?
All around it’s deadly quiet and presents a scene forlorn and
desolate.
I wonder why you were banished to this world’s corner and sigh
for your fate!
