Sadly...

Sadly Thinking of My Deceased Wife, Three Poems

Sadly Thinking of My Deceased Wife, Three Poems

Yuan Zhen

Your father’s most beloved youngest daughter you used to be

But led a hard life since you married a poor man like me.

Seeing me lack in clothes, you’d ransack your wicker suitcase;

And you’d sell your gold hairpin, when asked my wine to purchase.

For food we’d eat wild herbs, tasting long bean leaves in high glee;

To add fuel, we’d burn dry leaves from the old locust-tree.

Today I’ve more than a hundred thousand coins for my pay,

Yet only with temple sacrifice can I you repay.

Once we said for fun:” Imagine, if one of us dies!”

Now the very thing has taken place before my eyes.

All of your clothes have been given away save a bit;

I don’t have the heart to open your own sewing kit.

I still remember: for your maids you had deep pity;

So my dreams of you cause my aids to them in charity.

That such tragedy will happen to anyone, I know,

Yet to us, a poor couple, things come not but sorrow!

Sitting idle, I grieve for you and for myself too.

How many years indeed can one have all his life through?

His son lost, Deng You came to know he was fated so;

His wife dead, Pan Yue squandered his verse his grief to show.

What can I expect from our being entombed t’gether?

You can hardly be my wife again in the life other!

I can only keep my eyes widely open all night

To repay you for your life-long knitting your brows tight.
