Residence on a Rainy Day
Wei Yingwu
Guards with painted halberds stand in array;
In the lounge, sweet scent condenses to stay.
Winds and rains come a long way from the sea,
Cool our pavilion, and make us carefree.
Now my cares and illness nigh disappear
And a full house of honoured guests are here.
Being in high position, I feel shame
At people here being poor all the same.
With good sense, you’ll disregard praise or blame;
Broad-minded, forms or manners you’ll disclaim.
For the present, meat and fish are banned food,
But fruit and greens are still things for us good.
Lowering my head, I drink a cup of wine;
Lifting it, I hear the reading of poems fine.
Merry state of mind makes my body light
And puts me in a mental state of soaring flight.
Wuzhong is a place famed for men of letters;
Today how such bright constellation glitters!
This vassal prefecture, let it be known,
Is not distinguished for its wealth alone.
