Lamenting on the Riverside

Lamenting on the Riverside

Du Fu

I, humble old man from Shaoling,

Gulp down my sobs today in spring

And sneak along the Qu River

To its most deserted corner,

Where palaces massive and tall

Have their grand gates shut and locked all.

Willows and cattails can be seen;

But for whom are they fresh and green?

When in the past our Emperor dear

Came to the Southern Garden here,

His grand rainbow banners splendid

Made all in it bright and vivid.

She, his most favorite mistress,

Living in the Zhaoyang Palace,

Sat in the carriage by his side

Accompanying him on the ride.

Before the carriage marched in rows

Young maids armed with arrows and bows,

Whose harnessed white coursers by fits

Gnawed their glittering golden bits.

One archer turned herself around

And soon brought two birds to the ground

With one arrow shot at the sky

Where the poor fowls happened to fly.

What has now become the Beauty,

That of eyes bright and teeth pearly?

A lonely bleeding ghost homeless

E’er roaming in the wilderness!

Jiange stronghold lies far in west,

While the Wei flows east without rest.

The living “he” and his dead “dear”

Can’t again from each other hear!

Man, a creature of sympathy,

Will shed tears for the tragedy.

Can grass and flowers by the river

Remain just the same forever?

At dusk the rebels’ cavalry

Raise a dust shrouding the City.

Going home in the City’s south now,

I can’t help looking north anyhow.
