In one of the loveliest valleys of his kingdom King Agenor had built his palace, and beyond its gardens stretched deep meadows, warmed by the sun and caressed by the sea. Here each morning his daughter,Europa, came to play. The king her brothers,Cadmus,Phoenix and Cilix, were hardly less proud of their sister. For all the beauty of that green valley, where never harsh wind blew — all the softness(softness n.柔和, 温柔 )of its light and the gold of its fruit, seemed to have touched Europa;and the warmth which they shed was breathed back from her body. When she played in the meadows or rested under the shade of the great trees, her three brothers were never far away from her;and her father,at home in his palace, looked each evening for her return.
But her father and brothers were not the only ones who loved Europa. From his high home on Olympus the god Jupiter, gazing down, espied the young princess and marvelled at her form and gracegrace n. A god may see and remain unseen;and Jupiter, attracted by the sight of the maiden as she lay resting in the sunlit grass, fell deeply in love with her.At last,he made up his mind to carry her away as his bride.
One afternoon, when Europa was gathering flowers not far from her home, she saw a white bull coming slowly towards her.Her three brothers were at a little distance, and at first she felt afraid;but the creature looked at her so gently that she remained still, and allowed it to approach quite near.
“How strange!”she thought.“A bull so white I never saw before.Even its horns are white;and it moves so quietly and looks so lovingly!”
Europa put out a hand to pat the animal, and the bull rubbed its nose against her white dress. Then she laughed, and stoopeed to gather flowers, while the bull lay down in the grass so that she might hang garlands some way off.
“come quickly!” she called. “Here is a most beautiful white bull,so quiet and friendly! It is so tame that you might even ride on its back!”And in sport she climbed on to the creature‘s back, and it rose and trotted away across the meadow. Her brothers laughed;but as the bull beagan to trot more quickly towards the sea,Cadmus shouted:“come back!come back,Europa!”
Europa screamed, and a moment later the white bull, now galloping(gallop n. 使飞跑, 迅速运输) fast, had plunged into the waves, and was swimming rapidly from the shore.
The three brothers hastened to the water‘s edge and gazed after their sister. The bull swam strongly, and they saw white Europa with her dress a flutter and her arms round the animal’s neck, clinging tighty for very terror of the waves. The youths called her loudly by name, but it was useless, for she was already fast disappearing from view;and night fell, and no voice came back to them from over the sea.At last they turned, and went slowly home to their father.
But in the darkness of the night and the waters,Europa heard a voice bidding her calm her fears.“Weep no more, lovely Europa.”said the voice.“I,Jupiter, the king of all the gods,am caring you a way to a new land, for I have seen your great beauty and have chosen you to be my bride.” Europa stopped weeping, for she forgot the father and brothers at the thought of being united to a god.At dawn, the bull set her down on the shores of the island of Crete;a dazzling(dazzle v.(使)眼花, 炫耀 n.耀眼 )light fell about her,and lifting her eyes she looked upon great Jupiter himself.
Cadmus and his brothers had meanwhile arrived back at their father‘s palace. When Agenor saw them come tonguetied into his presence, his quick heart whispered to him of evil, and he said:“Why have you returned alone?Where is your sister Europa?”
Cadmus spoke.“We do not know, father.”he replied.“A white bull came into the meadows where we played.Europa climbed on its back, and the bull has carried her away across the sea.”
At first the king would not believe this story;but when the brothers had often and earnestly repeated it,he uttered a great cry,and tearing his kinglykingly adj.君主的 robes he cast himself on the ground. For a long while no one dared to go near him.
But on the following morning, the king sent for his three sons. His face was white and terrible, and he seemed moved as much by anger as by grief.
