34. Hermes and Argus

Argus was Hera’s servant. He has as many as one hundred eyes, which were located all over his body. He could sleep while always leaving some eyes open, making him a perfect watchman.

Hera knew that the heifer was in reality Io, one of the many nymphs Zeus was coupling with. Hera commanded Argus to guard the white heifer Io from Zeus, keeping her chained to the sacred olive tree.

To free Io, Zeus called on Hermes, god of thieves,to find a way to kill Argus and set Io free. Hermes thought there could be no better fun. He was extremely clever. He laid aside his winged cap and his winged shoes, and dressed like the shepherds in that country. As he walked along, he played carelessly on a shepherd’s pipe and played music close enough to draw Argus’ attention.

Argus found the music most pleasing and invited Hermes to sit and play music beside him. The music did not work as Hermes hoped. Hermes stopped playing music and began to talk and talk monotonously. The talk was nowhere near as enjoyable to Argus and he soon found himself bored as Hermes droned on. All of Hermes’ talk would lull Argus to sleep. Once the last eye had shut on Argus, Hermes struck Argus, killing him in his slumber. Io was set free, but Hera would turn on Io again, plaguing her with gadflies. In tribute to her trusted watchman Argus, Hera took his eyes off and set them on the tail of her favourite bird, the peacock.

35. Artemis

The Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and twin-sister of Apollo. Artemis was the goddess of the hunt and the moon. In Roman mythology, she was known as Diana.

In one legend, Artemis was born one day before her brother Apollo. Her mother gave birth to her on the island of Ortygia, then, almost immediately after her birth, she helped her mother to cross the straits over to Delos, where she then delivered Apollo. This myth helps explain how Artemis came to be considered the patron god of childbirth and the protector of pregnant women.

It is said that there were very few men with whom Artemis shared a friendly relationship and the most important of such kind of relationship in life was with her brother Apollo. They were very close to each other and seldom was another man in her life who could make Apollo insecure of his sister’s affection but when Orion came in her life, that was the first time that she felt romantically for somebody which was not taken by Apollo in good spirit.

Orion was the son of Poseidon. Although he was quite good at swimming, he liked hunting on the ground best. The handsome and strong hunter slowly fell in love with the hunting goddess and even proposed to her.
