According to the legend, there was a period of history when the people of Phrygia in Greece lacked a king. An oracle declared that the next person to ride into the city on a cart should become the king. A peasant named Gordias drove into the city on an ox-cart. Because of the oracle’s prophecy, he was made king of all the Phrygians. He was so happy that he dedicated his cart to Zeus. To keep it safe, he secured it with an incredibly complex knot known as the Gordian knot. An oracle then predicted that whoever could untie the Gordian knot would rule all Asia.

Centuries later, Alexander of Macedonia had already begun his conquest of Greece and Asia. He arrived in Phrygia and heard the story of the Gordian knot. He went to where the cart was tied and carefully examined the knot. Then he pulled out his sword and sliced through the rope, freeing the cart. While some may have viewed this as cheating, Alexander did go on to conquer large parts of Asia, proving the prophecy true.

Gordian knot
