Radboud University Nijmegen (Dutch: Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen) is a public university with a strong focus on research in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The first Nijmegen University was founded in 1655 and terminated around 1680. The university was founded because the Roman Catholic community wanted its own university. At the time, Roman Catholics in the Netherlands were disadvantaged and occupied almost no higher posts in government. After fierce competition, Nijmegen was chosen as the city to house the university. The Radboud University Nijmegen was established in 1923 as the Catholic University of Nijmegen. Until 2004, when it took its current name. Radboud University is noted for its green campus, often listed among the most attractive in the Netherlands. Radboud University’s research contributes explicitly and conscientiously to expanding the limits of knowledge in the interests of society as a whole. In 2010, two professors connected to Radboud University won the Nobel Prize for Physics. The mutual exchange between the city and the university can be heard in the intellectual debates which, in a university city such as Nijmegen, are particularly lively.
System: Education of the university is organised within seven faculties: The Faculty of Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies; The Faculty of Arts; The Faculty of Law; The Faculty of Social Sciences; The Nijmegen School of Management; The Faculty of Science; The Faculty of Medical Sciences. The University offers 28 international Master’s programs taught in English within five different fields: Man & Society, Man & Health, Man & Culture, Policy & Organization and Nature & Science.
City show: Nijmegen is a municipality and a city in the east of the Netherlands, near the German border. Nijmegen and region are known as the ideal area for walkers, cyclists and runners alike, with its annual highlight the Four-Day Marches, the world’s largest walking event, attracting walkers from all over the world. The quintessential Nijmegen streets with their unique and special shops are the most appealing. Walk down the Lange Hezelstraat, the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands. Museum Het Valkhof displays the finest of the Roman Netherlands, a colourful collection of modern art and a magnificent collection of ancient art. The cultural centre LUX—the largest art house cinema in the Netherlands—also offers theatre, music, debate, and multimedia.
