Utrecht University (Dutch： Universiteit Utrecht， formerly Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht) is a university in Utrecht， the Netherlands. It is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe. Utrecht University was founded on March 26， 1636. The inaugural speech was given by influential professor of theology Gisbertus Voetius， and Bernardus Schotanus (professor of law and mathematics) was the university"s first rector magnificus. Utrecht University flourished in the seventeenth century. The university attracted many students from abroad (especially Germany， England and Scotland). Utrecht played a prominent role in the golden age of Dutch science. Utrecht University offers a high-quality academic environment in which inspiring and committed academics share their knowledge with curious and ambitious students. More and more students from abroad are attracted to the University thanks to the extensive offering of high-quality English taught programmes leading to internationally recognised， accredited degrees. Utrecht University maintains close relationships with business and industry， government authorities， interest groups and other organisations through contract research and consultancy. By developing and intensifying collaborative links between the University and its partners， the University demonstrates its added value to the knowledge society.
System：Utrecht University boasts seven faculties and three teaching institutes. Each faculty consists of a number of departments. Each department coordinates the research and teaching programmes of a specific field of science. Scientific staff are appointed at department level. Seven faculties includes： Faculty of Geosciences； Faculty of Humanities； Faculty of Law， Economics and Governance； Faculty of Medicine； Faculty of Science； Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences； Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Teaching institutes includes： University College Roosevelt； University College Utrecht. The two large faculties of Humanities and Law are situated in the inner city of Utrecht. The other five faculties and most of the administrative services are located in De Uithof， a campus area on the outskirts of the city. University College is situated in the former Kromhout Kazerne， which used to be a Dutch military base.
City show： Utrecht is a lively city in the geographical centre of the Netherlands. Utrecht is a real student city. In the historic centre you will find excellent museums in a setting of picturesque courtyards， restaurants and delightful little shops. Much of the city’s mediaeval atmosphere can still be felt today in its pattern of streets and alleys. In the summer you can enjoy a drink or a meal at one of many pavement cafés along the streets and canals. Utrecht is also known for its festivals and cultural programs. The varied range of large and small theatres in Utrecht will surprise you. Leading theatre groups present plays， opera， dance， musicals and cabaret shows. Utrecht also has many trendy clubs where you can hear the latest hits and see the trendiest fashions.
