Lund University was founded in 1666 as a step in the process of making Sk.ne Swedish and to demonstrate the re-establishment of Swedish control. Sweden has had， in the past， a turbulent history with Denmark. With the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658， Denmark lost the southern counties of Sk.ne， Blekinge and Halland to Sweden. There had previously been a Studium Generale (the equivalent of a university college) for priests in Lund， founded in 1438 and operational in the 16th century. The new university was given the name Regia Academia Carolina. At the beginning there were only four faculties—theology， law， medicine and philosophy. Around 1760， the university reputation dropped as the number of students fell below 200， most of whom hailed from around the province. The real rise of the University came during the 1780s. New chairs were established and the number of students increased. The campus reflects the University"s history， with magnificent buildings separated by cobbled streets and green spaces. Campus locations include Lund， Helsingborg， Malm. and Ljungbyhed. The main Lund University campus is located in the city of Lund. Voted the best place to live in Sweden， Lund is a safe city with the healthiest and youngest population in the country. The University is a strong influence on the city of Lund and several university buildings are located in the heart of the city. Sweden’s first and most successful research park， Ideon， is situated in Lund， and the country’s two largest research ventures， Max IV and ESS are to be located here. Lund Cathedral， dating from 1145， is one of the most popular attractions marking the centre of the city.

It provides education and research in engineering， science， law， social sciences， economics and management， medicine， humanities， theology， fine arts， music and drama， etc.
Innovation： One of the most famous innovations based on research from Lund University is diagnostic ultrasound， which is today a routine method of examination in hospitals around the world. Other examples of pioneering innovations are the artificial kidney， which laid the foundations for the multinational company Gambro and which makes life easier for dialysis patients worldwide， and Bluetooth technology， which enables wireless communication over short distances.
