The University of Coimbra (UC) (Portuguese： Universidade de Coimbra) is a Portuguese public university in Coimbra， Portugal. Established in Lisbon in 1290， but definitely being transferred to Coimbra in 1537， where it remains to this day， it is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world， the oldest university of Portugal， and one of its largest higher education and research institutions. In 1321， the University of Coimbra in Portugal became the first school to require that its students wear robes. The University"s Joanine Library was founded in 1717. The libray contains about 200，000 volumes， namely works of medicine， geography， history， humanistic studies， science， civil and canonical law， philosophy and theology. The ex-libris of the city is the Tower of the University of Coimbra， that stands out in the landscape. The functions of this tower school， which has three bells， were clear： to indicate the principal moments of academic life， scoring school hours， the beginning and end of classes and the curfew for students. This University is not only a true icon of Portuguese culture in the world， but it also pursues a policy of constant improvement in various fields， which allows it to reassert the high quality of research and teaching， as well as an active role in the development of businesses and industry， and in activities involving intensive knowledge in Portugal in connection with pioneer multinational and international organisations working for the advance of science and knowledge.
System： The University of Coimbra is organized into eight different faculties according to a wide range of fields， granting academic bachelor"s ， master"s and doctorate degrees in arts， engineerings， humanities， mathematics， natural sciences， social sciences， sports and technologies. The admission at the UC is merit-based. The university has some programmes which are known for higher-than-average selectiveness. To these study programmes like biomedical engineering， pharmacy， medicine or architecture， admission is very difficult process.
City show： Coimbra is a city in the municipality of Coimbra in Portugal. There are many archaeological structures which date back to the Roman era， when Coimbra was the settlement of Aeminium， such as its well-preserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus. Coimbra is known for its university students" festivals. The first one， The Tin Can Parade， is a homecoming parade that occurs at the beginning of the academic year， and is a welcome to the new university students. The second one， The Burning of the Ribbons， takes place at the end of the second semester (usually in the beginning of May) and it is one of the biggest student parties in all Europe. It lasts for 8 days.
