7. Then lotus-gathering flashed into my mind. This was an old custom south of the Yangtse, which apparently originated very early and was most popular in the period of the Six Kingdoms, as we see from the songs of the time. The lotuses were picked by girls in small boats, who sang haunting songs as they padded. They turned out in force, we may be sure, and there were spectators too, for that was a cheerful festival and a romantic one. We have a good account of it in a poem by Emperor Yuan of the Liang dynasty called Lotus Gatherers:
8. Deft boys and pretty girls, Reach an understanding while boating;
9. Their prows veer slowly, But the wine cups pass quickly;
10. Their oars are entangled, As they cut through the duckweed,
11. And girls with slender waists, Turn to gaze behind them.
12. Now spring and summer meet. Leaves are tender, flowers fresh;
13. With smiles they protect their silks, drawing in their skirts, afraid lest the boat upset.
14. There we have a picture of these merry excursions. This must have been a delightful event, and it is a great pity we cannot enjoy it today.
15. I also remember some lines from the poem West Islet:
16. When they gather lotus at Nantang in autumn
17. The lotus blooms are higher than their heads;
18. They stoop to pick lotus seeds,
19. Seeds as translucent as water.
20. If any girls were here now to pick the lotus, the flowers would reach above their heads too— ah, rippling shadows alone are not enough! I was feeling quite homesick for the south, when I suddenly looked up to discover I had reached my own door. Pushing it softly open and tiptoeing in, I found all quiet inside, and my wife fast asleep.
8. 于是妖童媛女,荡舟心许;
9. 鷁首徐回,兼传羽杯;
11. 尔其纤腰束素,迁延顾步;
17. 莲花过人头;
The Origin Of The Rainbow
1. Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel. All claimed that they were the best.
2. Green said: “Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority.”
3. Blue interrupted: “You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would all be nothing.”
4. Yellow chuckled: “The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, and the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun.”
5. Orange started next: “I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, oranges and mangoes. When I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you.”
6. Red could stand it no longer so he shouted out: “I am the ruler of all of you. I am the blood—the life’s blood! I bring fire into the blood. I am the color of passion and love.”
7. Purple was very tall and spoke with great pomp: “I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs and bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey.”
8. Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination: “Think of me. I am the color of silence. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace.”
9. And so the colors went on quarreling, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening, and thunder rolled. Rain started to pour down.
10. Rain began to speak: “You foolish colors. Don’t you know that you were each made for a special purpose? Join hands with one another and come to me.”
11. Doing as they were told, the colors joined hands and united.
12. Rain continued: “From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow.”
