感遇二首

其一
兰叶春葳蕤，桂华秋皎洁。
欣欣此生意，自尔为佳节。
谁知林栖者，闻风坐相悦。
草木有本心，何求美人折？

Ⅰ
In spring， thoroughworts are all rich and green；
In autumn， osmanthus flowers， white and clean.
It is such thriving liveliness of theirs
That brings good seasons to us unawares.
The forest dwellers just sit down， you know，
And please themselves when they hear the wind blow.
Plants are gifted with nature of their own；
They needn’t ask to be plucked by hands unknown.
其七
江南有丹桔，经冬犹绿林。
岂伊地气暖，自有岁寒心。
可以荐嘉客，奈何阻重深？
运命惟所遇，循环不可寻。
徒言树桃李，此木岂无阴？
Ⅶ
In the south there are trees of tangerine；
All through winter they can still remain green.
Is it due to the warmth of the soil there？
It is because these plants can coldness bear.
Their fruit are good gifts for one’s guests honoured，
Then why are they secludedly cornered？
Luck is merely a thing controlled by Fate；
It is hard to discern its cycling gait.
Some men like only peach and plum trees to plant，
Shades of those tangerine trees see they can’t？
