She Is Alone and Can’t See Him
Shen Quanqi
In a room scented with tulip sits a young wife alone,
While on a tortoise-shell roof-beam perch a couple of swallows.
The late autumn’s fallen leaves come with clothes-flailings on stone;
Her man’s ten-year stay in Liaoyang Quarter brings her sorrow.
For a long time she has not heard from him on the frontier,
And autumn nights south of the capital are long and drear.
The sadness that she can’t see him makes her hard to sustain;
Still more she suffers as the moon shines on her bed-curtain.
