Seeing Chen Zhangfu Off
Li Qi
In fourth moon, the south wind blows and wheat turns yellow;
Date flowers aren’t fallen yet, while long do tung leaves grow.
Hills you left in the morn, you can still see ere night
While horses’ neighs make you think of home not in sight.
Chen, my friend, you are a man so open-minded,
With dragon’s whiskers, tiger’s brow and wide forehead.
You’ve read ten thousand volumes your knowledge to gain;
You can’t humbly long in the woods obscure remain.
At the East Gate you oft buy wine for us to drink;
Just as light feathers, of world affairs you e’er think.
Dead drunk and asleep, you don’t know the sun has set;
Sometimes, vainly watch a high cloud you yourself let .
The long river’s billows darken up with the sky;
The boat can’t sail, though seen at the ferry to lie.
You, a stranger from Zheng, must have not been home yet;
As one in Luoyang, in vain for you I feel regret.
It’s said you’ve many acquaintances at hometown;
Just dismissed yesterday, how can you settle down?
