An Old War Song

An Old War Song

Li Qi

By day our men mounted hills to look out for beacon;

At dusk they watered horses to Jiao River taken.

They marched in sand-darkened land ’mid gongs’ strikes and

wind’s blows

And heard the pipa say out the princess’s hidden woes.

For myriad miles camps spread, no city walls could be seen;

Hard fell rains and snows the mighty desert e’en to screen.

Night after night the flying wild geese bemoaned their fate,

And Tartar soldiers’ tears from two eyes did not abate.

It was said the way through the Jade Gate Pass was still blocked.

Our men’s lives would in their generals’ fate just be locked.

Their bones were entombed in the wilderness year by year.

What was the good of grapes’ being brought to Han realm here?
