英国人的饮茶史
17世纪以前，英国人还不知道茶为何物。据说茶是由英王查理二世（1630～1685年）的王后凯瑟琳带到英国的。凯瑟琳出身于葡萄牙的布拉冈沙家庭。她出嫁时从东印度公司购买了中国红茶100公斤，把它带到英国王宫，她把喝茶当作一种宫庭乐趣。不久，英国朝廷大臣、贵族、社会名流纷纷效仿，天长日久，喝茶的风气逐渐遍及全英国。到今天，饮茶不仅是英国人所喜爱的消遣方式，而且是一项重要的生意，英国拥有许多茶叶公司。茶的重要性也体现在英国人的语言——英语中，并逐渐融入到英国文化中。英语中也出现了许多与茶（tea）有关的短语如：sb.'s cup of tea（某人的一杯茶），指“正合口味，正中下怀”。英语中也产生许多与tea有关的词组，如：teacup（茶杯），tea caddy（茶筒），tea tray（茶盘），teapot（茶壶），tea garden（茶园），tea cake（当茶点用的一种饼），tea dealer（茶商）。英国人习惯于三餐两茶。每天，人们工作、学习一段时间后，需要停下来休息一刻钟左右，喝杯茶，吃点东西，这段时间叫Tea Break（茶休），茶休一般为一天两次：Morning Tea（上午茶）和Afternoon Tea（下午茶）。上午茶一般在10：30分左右，下午茶一般在下午四五点钟时，喝下午茶的习惯源于英国18世纪的一位女公爵，她每天在午餐和晚餐之间总感到有点饿，于是就在每天下午4点到5点之间喝点茶，吃点儿点心、三明治等，这种饮食法马上在英国盛行起来，成为今天的Afternoon Tea。英国家庭和朋友往来，最喜欢请朋友喝茶。一些家庭喜欢在周末下午请朋友共享茶点，举行一个小小的Tea Party（茶会）。这种非正式的茶会，少则二三人，多则数十人。一般家庭都备有茶叶、茶具、茶点。下午茶一定要浓，主人在厨房将茶和各色点心准备好后，用茶车（Tea Wagon）推入客厅或户外，供客人享用，客人们一边品茶，一边聊天，情尽在茶中。
