英语中“溺爱小孩”用dote表达，有趣的是，由dote衍生而来名词dotage表示“老糊涂”。看来，“溺爱、娇惯”还真得与“年老智衰”有关系呢。
据词源记载，dote最初来源于荷兰语doten（愚蠢的），13世纪dote作为动词进入英语词汇，表示“头脑糊涂，行为愚蠢甚至疯颠”；同时期，人们开始把“糊涂”的普遍义意专用于老人身上（尤指因年事过高，记忆力、智力衰退）；在现代，dote更常用来形容“家长对小孩或人对宠物，不讲原则的溺爱”。
Dotage表示“老人糊涂”是沿用了dote的第二层涵意。来看个例子：
