Ulysses abode for a year on Crices island，and at the end of that time，advised by the goddess，he made a strange and perilousperilous adj.危险的journey to the Realm of the Shades.For when he asked Circe how long his wanderings must continue，and what were the godsplans for him，she replied that she was as ignorantignorant adj.无知的of these things as he；and she directed him on a voyage to the Underworld，where dwelt the departed spirits，in order that he might seek out the spiritspirit n.精神，灵魂，幽灵，妖精，勇气，火力，热情，情绪vt.诱拐，鼓励，鼓舞of the prophet Tiresias，whose alone could tell him of his futur.Ulysses made this voyage and met with the shade of Tiresias；and Tiresias had little comfort to offer，for he saw many troubles yet to come.尤利西斯在喀耳刻的岛上住了一年之久，最后在这位女巫的建议下，他到阴间作了一次奇异而危险的旅行？因为当他询问喀耳刻他的流浪还要持续多久？众神到底怎样安排他的未来时，女神回答说她对这些事一无所知？但她建议他到阴魂所在的地府走一趟，在那里可以找到预言家忒瑞西阿斯的阴魂，它可以预言他的将来？尤利西斯来到地府和忒瑞西阿斯的阴魂相会，忒瑞西阿斯很为难，因为他预知尤利西斯的未来充满了苦难？
On his return to the island of Aeaea，Ulysses told Circe all that tiresias had said，and added that he must take final leave of her on the morrow.That same night，Circe warned Ulysses of the dangers he would encounter in the next part of his journey home.In particular，she explained how he must pass near the dangerous and alluringallure v.吸引Sirens，and must encounter the two monsters Charybdis and Scylla.“Above all，”She added warningly，“take heed that you do not land on the sacred island of Trinacria.”

The next morning，Ulysses and his followers said farewell to Circe，and embarked once more.As the men plied their oars over the grey sea，Ulysses told his followers something of the perils immediately before them.

“In due course，as I have learnt from Circe，we shall meet with the mysterious maidens whom men call the Sirens.They live alone on a small island，and sit all day in a meadowmeadow n.草地，牧场of flowers near the sea.There they sing a song of such enchantment that no man who comes within earshot can resist it.He fells compelled to land on the island，only to be torn to pieces by these beautiful but terrible creatures.However，I do not intend that we shall perish，and to prevent you from hearing the song I shall plug your ears with wax.I shall not plug my own ears，so you must bind me to the mast and see that I do not get free；for I intend to listen to the Sirenssinging.”

Ulysses made a quick sign to Eurylochus，and the latter rose up and seized a rope.With strong arms he bound Ulysses to the mast of the vessel，and he had hardly done so when he observed his leader to be intentlyintently adv.专心地，集中地，专心地listening.

The ship swept forward：all eyes were watchful to catch sight of the Sirensisland.As for Ulysses，he now seemed to be aware of nothing save the music，which he heard every moment more clearly.Soon there came into view an island so be flowered that it might have been a mass of blossomsblossom n.花(尤指结果实者)，花开的状态，兴旺期vi.开花，兴旺，发展afloatafloat adj.adv.飘浮的，在海上的，传播的on the ocean；but the men hardly noticed the island，their attention being entirelyentirely adv.完全地，全然地，一概地taken up by the beauty of the Sirens themselves.For their arms and shoulders were whiter than whitest foam，and their eyes shone with the soft innocenceinnocence n.清白of a summer sea.They turned their gaze full upon Ulysses，and to his ears they now addressed their melodious strain.

Then they sang a song of such grief that Ulysses was seized with a longing to stretch out his arms towards them，if it were only to extend the fingers of comfort.He struggled，and his bonds began to loosen；but Eurylochus sprang up，and seizing a stout cord he bound his prince even more firmly to the mast.The ship was almost brushing the island of flowers；the Sirens bent forward and directed their glance at Ulysses，looking soft sorrow into his eyes.But Ulyssescompanions plied their oars，and a moment later they had left the maidens behind them.
