Once they had passed the island by，the voyagers saw what they had not observed before.Among the flowers lay the mouldering skeletonsskeleton n.(动物之)骨架，骨骼，基干，纲要，万能钥匙of men，all victims of the Sirensdeathly lure.The sailors took but one look；then they bent over their oars and did not slacken pace till they knew themselves to be out of earshot of the fatal song.

At last they were able to chear their ears of wax，and gather round the mast.

“My men，”said Ulysses，“you may unbind me now，for I hear the enchantment no longer.”

The old story tells us how，after leaving the Sirens，Ulysses and his followers braved Scylla and Charybdis，two terrible monsters of the sea.After this adventure they sailed on in prosperous prosperous adj.繁荣的weather，and in due course came in sight of the island of Trinacria.Now the shade of old Tiresias had warned Ulysses not to land on this island，and the warning had been repeated by Circe.For here the god of the sun，Apollo，had for many years grazed his cattle，and it was an offence for any man to slay these creatures.So Ulysses said：

But Ulyssesmen were weary of the waves，and they insisted on landing on the beach.They swore to their leader that they would not harm the fine cattle which they could see grazing in the distance，and they ate their food in the shelter of the ships.After supper they wept a while for lost companions，and then fell asleep，intending to reembark in the morning.
但尤利西斯的伙伴们都已厌倦海上的颠簸，他们坚持在此地登陆，并向首领发誓他们只在船舱里进餐，不会伤害那些在远处吃草的神牛？吃过晚饭后，他们为死去的朋友悲戚了很长时间才慢慢入睡，等着第二天清晨再度启航？
During the night a great gale blew up，and when the crew awoke they knew that they could not put to sea.The storm continued all day，and all the next，and on the next it still showed no sign of abating.Time went on，and the stores of food were gradually consumed.When all the flour and wine were gone，the men set out to hunt for birds and fish around the coast.
半夜时分，一阵大风吹起，惊醒全体船员，他们发现暂时已不能起航？这场风暴持续了整整一天，第二天？第三天还没有平息的迹象？时间就这样过去了，食物的储备越来越少了，当面粉和酒全部耗尽，船员们开始以捉鱼捕鸟为食？
One day Ulysses went apart from his men，and the gods sent a deep sleep upon him.While he was absent，Eurylochus called together the other members of the party.

“My comrades，”he cried，“we are perishing with hunger.Our prince tells us that if we slaughter slaughter n.屠宰，残杀，屠杀v.屠宰，残杀，屠杀these fat cattle which we see not far off，we shall all die upon the seas.Good！Better to die quickly from a gulp of salt water，than to perish slowly from lack of food！Are you all agreed？”
