They were. When Ulysses woke from sleep, and returned to his companions,he saw them carving fresh meat and setting it to roast over a fire.
“Wretched men!”he cried.“What are you doing! You have slain the sacred cattle of the sungod!”
“We know it,Ulysses,”came the calm reply.“And if we get safely home to Ithaca,we will appease appease vt.平息,安抚,缓和,使满足the sungod by building him a temple and making rich offerings!”
But as they spoke they heard close at had a sound like the lowing of cattle.
“Where did that sound come from?”enquired Ulysses.“There are no cattle grazing here on the beach.”
“It came,”replied the men uneasily,“from the meat which is roasting over the fire!”
They spoke the truth. From the meat over the fire, and from the raw pieces which lay around, strange groanings were now heard.Desperately the men continued to roast the meat, hoping thereby to stifle the groans;but still the meat, even when cooked, sent forth sounds as of a creature in agony.
Then one of the men sprang suddenly to his feet, and covered his face with his hands.“I can bear it no longer!”he cried.“The hides—look at the hides!”The men gazed in horror at the oxhides on the ground, and saw them moving as if they would crawl away.
“Come,”argued Eurylochus,“we must pay no heed to these things,or we shall lose our courage.Let us feast, and think no more about them.”
So the men feasted all that day,and for five days to come.Only Ulysses fasted and stood by,looking sorrowfully at his rash companions.
On the seventh day the storm died down, and the crew joyfully carried provisions on board, and once more made for the open sea.But meanwhile,as Ulysses afterwards learnt, the outraged Apollo had rushed into the assembly assembly n.集合,装配,集会,集结,汇编of the gods, and had threatened to withdraw his light from the earth, unless something were done to punish the men who had killed and eaten his cattle.
“God of the sun,”replied Jupiter,“you need take no such desperate measures. As soon as that ship of theirs puts forth to sea,I will strike it with a thunderbolt, and all the culprits culprit n.犯人in it shall perish.Ulysses alone—for he has not eaten of the meat—shall be allowed to survive”.Saying this, the father of the gods leaned over to select the fiercest of his thunderbolts.
So it happened that, when the adventurers had left Trinacria behind them,a dark cloud appeared in the sky and hung low over the ship.Almost at once there came a hurricane:a sudden onrush of wind struck the ship with unbelievable force, and swept it clean of masts and rigging.
Then great Jupiter smiled, and stretched out his hand.He released his thunderbolt:there was a flash,a roar, and the ship was rent to pieces. One and all,Ulyssescomrades were swept into the water, and with a frenzied waving of arms and legs they were dragged to their death in the depths below.
Ulysses alone escaped drowning.Clinging to a piece of the wreckage, half blinded by the spray spray n. 喷射,喷溅and all but choked by salt water,he allowed the waves to carry him where they would.
And the waves carried him onward for nine days.Towards the end of that time he ceased to be aware of the sea,of the cold,or his own exhaustion, but dreamed that he was on his own island of Ithaca, and that he could hear the birds singing. On the moning of the tenth day he was cast ashore on Ogygia, the island home of the goddess Calypso.
