“Great queen,”he sad, while a sudden silence fell in the hall,“I am a stranger who has undergone many sufferings, and I was yesterday cast up on your shore.I have come to this house to ask for the protection of your noble husband, and to beg for your help in getting me back to my own country.”
The silence was unbroken;men gazed at this stranger who had appeared they knew not from where. At last King Alcinous, mindful of the rules of courtesy courtesy n.谦恭,允许,礼貌,approached the stranger and said:
“Rise,my guest, and take your seat on one.of these thrones.Let it never be said that we have failed to honour a traveller who asks for our protection.Rise up,and before you tell us even your name and your story,be assured that you will receive from us all kindness, and a safe conduct on your journey.”
Then Ulysses rose and was led to one of the thrones, and the servants placed before him meat and drink,so that he might make a hearty hearty adj.
After this supper, and after the noble lords who feasted there had departed,Alcinous again addressed his visitor.
“Once more,my good friend,be assured of your welcome in this palace.Your entertainment shall be all that a man could wish.Tonight we will provide you with a bed in the portico, and tomorrow we will entertain you in a manner becoming to your noble birth—for we take you to be a prince of some standing. After that,we shall lose no time in embarking you in one of our swift ships, and you shall be conveyed to your country, wherever that may be.”
“But,sir,”said Arete, who had observed the clothes that Ulysses was wearing,“before you go to rest you must tell me just one thing.Where have you come from, and how did you get possession of those clothes?”
Ulysses replied:“Great queen,I will tell you briefly.Nineteen days ago I set sail from the island of the goodess Calypso, and came across the seas in boat which I myself had made.Unluckily,Neptune was fit to raise a great storm against me,and it was only with difficulty that I was able to land on your island.I was sleeping in a thicket near the shore when the laughter of your daughters maidens awoke me.I lost no time in throwing myself on your daughters mercy—for never have I seen any maiden so like a goddess—and she gave me these clothes that you see me wearing.”
“My daughter did well.”said Alcinous,“But she was a little lacking in courtesy,in that she did not personally bring you home to my palace.”
“That, great prince, was not her fault but mine. She would willingly have brought me home, but I chose to linger behind, not being sure of how you would receive me.I beg you not even to speak of the matter to your daughter.”
So Alcinous smiled, satisfied with Ulyssesstory, and Arete arranged for a bed to be made in the portico of the palace. To this bed Ulysses was glad to retire, and it was not long before he sank into a deep slumber.
On the following morning,Alcinous called an assembly of all the lords of his island, and when they had come together he cried:“My lords, listen to me.We have in our midst a stranger who has come to us for protection. He has asked us to escort him safely to his home.I now suggest that, even before we hear his story,we make ready a fine ship which shall sail tomorrow night and bear the stranger back to his country.Meanwhile we will entertain him with dancing, music, and games of skill.”
The nobles agreed heartily to this suggestion, and after everyone had feasted, and had listened to the minstrel, the younger men repaired to an open space outside the palace, where they took part in running, wresting, jumping, boxing, and throwing the discus.
As these young lords were resting after their games,it occurred to Laodamas, one of the sons of Alcinous, that the stranger also might like to show his skill in sports. So he went across to where Ulysses sat,and said:
“Sir,you have seen us at our games, and you have been able to judge our skill in activities of various kinds. Will you not show us what you in your turn can do?Forget your sorrows for a moment, and join with us on the field.”
But Ulysses replied:“Laodamas, can you not leave me alone? You see me uneasy because I am still far from my native native n. 本国的,出生地的,本地的,与生俱来的land;nor can I be really happy until I am on my way there once more.Let me sit and watch you and your companions, for I have not the heart to take part in any games.”
