The University of St. Andrews (informally St. Andrews University or St. Andrews) is a research university in St. Andrews， Scotland. It is the oldest university in Scotland and the third oldest in the English-speaking world. Scottish students in the Middle Ages were forced abroad to pursue their studies， with no national university to develop their academic abilities. By 1410 most had been driven to Paris from Oxford and Cambridge by the Wars of Scottish Independence with England. St. Andrews was the obvious choice—the seat of the greatest bishopric in Scotland and location of a monastery noted as a centre for learning. In May 1410 a group of masters， mainly graduates of Paris， initiated a school of higher studies in St. Andrews. International scholars have been coming to St. Andrews to study， teachers to teach， and students to learn since the foundation in 1413. The University of St. Andrews has more than six centuries of history behind it. Through the centuries many great minds have been attracted to St. Andrews， including poet William Dunbar MA 1479， Benjamin Franklin honorary Doctor of Laws 1759， etc.The University has two major sites within the town. The first is the United College， St. Andrews on North Street， which functions both as a teaching space and venue for student events， incorporating the Departments of Social Anthropology and Modern Languages. The second is St Mary"s College， St. Andrews， based on South Street， which houses the Schools of Divinity， Psychology and Neuroscience， as well as the King James Library. The University is divided into four faculties： Arts， Divinity， Medicine and Science.
Traditions： Like other top UK schools， St. Andrews has a set of wacky traditions， such as the Raisin Weekend（Raisin Weekend is held annually over the last weekend of November. Affairs often begin with a tea party (or similar) thrown by the mother(s) and then a pub-crawl or house party led by the father(s). It is fairly common for several academic families to combine in the latter stages of the revels. ）and the May Dip， when students wake up at dawn and run into the North Sea. One of the most conspicuous traditions at St. Andrews is the wearing of academic dress， particularly the distinctive red undergraduate gown of the United College.
City show： There has been an important church in St. Andrews since at least the 8th century and a bishopric since at least the 11th century. St Andrew"s Cathedral was at one time Scotland"s largest building. The tall square tower， part of the church， was built to hold the relics of St Andrew and became known as the first cathedral in the town. St. Andrews is also known worldwide as the"home of golf". Visitors travel to St. Andrews in great numbers for several courses ranked amongst the finest in the world， as well as for the sandy beaches.
