The University of Montpellier (French： Université de Montpellier) was a French university in Montpellier in the Languedoc-Roussillon région of the south of France. Its present-day successor universities are the University of Montpellier I， Montpellier II University and Paul Valéry University， Montpellier III. The university is considerably older than its formal founding date， associated with a bull issued by Pope Nicholas IV in 1289， combining all the long-existing schools into a university. The Jardin des plantes de Montpellier， founded in 1593， is the oldest botanical garden in France. It was in this school that the biological theory of vitalism， elaborated by Barthez (1734–1806)， had its origin.Since 1970 the University of Montpellier has been divided into three universities： the University of Montpellier I ， Montpellier II University and Paul Valéry University， Montpellier III. Montpellier is a city in southern France. It is the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region， as well as the Hérault department. The main focus point of the city is the Place de la Comédie， with the Opera Comédie built in 1888. The Festival de Radio France et Montpellier is a summer festival of opera and other music held in Montpellier.
University of Montpellier I： Montpellier 1 University， a distant de-scendant of two mediaeval universities that are among the oldest in Eu-rope， is pleased to incorporate an international element into this heritage that has been passed down through the years. Montpellier 1 University is always open to new ideas， to innovation and to building networks of universities. It is a member of the Coimbra network. University of Montpellier II： University of Montpellier II is a Re-search University whose training courses and research activities cover the whole Scientific and Technological areas：Fundamental Biology， Ap-plied Biology and Ecology， Chemistry， Engineering Sciences， Sciences of the Universe， Physics and Mathematics， Management， Education Sciences. The University of Montpellier II offers a wide range of train-ings in Scientific， Technological and Management areas. The University， contributes to the socio-economic development of the Langued-oc-Roussillon region and to the students employability through its dynamism， the international influence of its laboratories and a professional-oriented policy.
University of Montpellier III： Paul Valéry University (French： Université Paul-Valéry Montpelli-er III)， also known as Montpellier III or UPV， is a French university in the Academy of Montpellier. It is one of the three successor universities to the University of Montpellier， specialising in the arts， lan-guages and social sciences.The university is a member of the Coimbra Group， an association of long-established European multidisciplinary universities of high international standard. In 1970， the former faculties formed three separate universities (Montpellier I， II and III). The Fac-ulty of Arts， Languages， Social Sciences and Humanities becoming the “University of Montpellier III”， whilst also taking on the name of Paul Valéry as a homage to the Sète-born writer who studied in Montpel-lier.

蒙彼利埃大学的文学院、艺术学院、语言学院和人文与社会科学学院组成了现在的蒙彼利埃第三大学，大学取名为“保尔.华莱利”，以纪念这位出生于塞特、在蒙彼利埃接受教育的作家和哲学家。
法国文艺复兴时代的伟大作家，人文主义的代表人物拉伯雷，法国著名的哲学家、社会学及实证主义的创始人奥古斯特.孔德，人文主义之父彼特拉克均在此学习过。我国著名数学家、中国近代数学的先驱熊庆来曾在蒙彼利埃大学获得理学硕士学位，中国近代知名生物学家周太玄、中国著名心理学家左任侠等早年均求学于此。
