Written at Wangchuan Retreat During a Prolonged Rain

Late cooking smoke drifts about where rain-drenched open
woods stand;
Cooked greens and millet is sent to the eastern new farmland.
Over misty water-logged fields white-feathered egrets fly;
Amidst shadowy summer woods orioles sweetly cry.
I often watch rose of Sharon on hillside in quiet,
And dine under a pine tree with dewed mallow as diet.
An old hermit, of the world I’ve nothing more expected;
Of what indeed should I be by those sea-gulls suspected!
