Contemplations on the Historical Sites, Five Poems
Contemplations on the Historical Sites, Five Poems
Du Fu
Ⅰ
While the northeastern land is in war chaos and torn apart,
I wander about the southwestern region with a sore heart.
In chambers near the Three Gorges my days and months die away,
And among alien folk wearing coloured clothes I have to stay.
The seemingly loyal Jie proves to be roguish in the end;
As a poet lamenting the times, I can’t yet homeward wend.
That reminds me of Yu Xin who led a life wretched and drear
And whose later poems made a stir in the Jiangguan area.
Ⅱ
Song Yu’s use of the phrase “sway and fall” shows how deep is
his sorrow;
Talented, graceful and learned, he serves as our model also.
Looking back o’er ages, I feel grief and can’t help shedding
my tears;
He and I are ill-fated alike though in different times and years.
His literary grace still shines in the dwellings where he lived of old;
Is his tale, The Goddess of Cloud and Rain, really a dream retold?
Especially, now that the grand palaces of Chu are all gone,
Doubts upon the boatmen’s words of their whereabouts men
have oft shown.
Ⅲ
Myriads of mounts and valleys extend to the Jingmen Mountain;
The old village where the Palace Maid Ming grew up still there
remains.
Leaving the Purple Palace, she had the northern deserts in sight;
And now only her evergreen tomb lies in the evening twilight.
Could her features of spring beauty be discerned just by a portrait?
In vain her spirit wearing pendants on moonlit nights came home
straight.
The Tartar tunes struck out on the pipa more than a thousand years
Tell clearly how deep was her sorrow that will move all men to tears.
Ⅳ
Near the Three Gorges the King of Shu with his forces attacked Wu;
In the year he passed away he was in the Yong An Palace too.
On the deserted mountain his fluttering banners one seems to see;
Among the desolate temples his Jade Hall is supposed to be.
On fir and pine trees in the old shrine water cranes nest and up grow;
There, on some occasions in summer and winter villagers will go.
As the temple of his Minister Zhuge Liang is near to his,
To both of them people always meanwhile offer sacrifices.
Ⅴ
As the world itself the high renown of Zhuge Liang will last long;
The noble, talented statesman’s statue wins people’s respect
strong.
He took pains to adopt tactics of Three Kingdoms’ coexistence;
His spirit, like a roc in the boundless skies, lives in permanence.
He was much the same as Yi and Lu in a premier’s achievement
And in leading the armed forces than Xiao and Cao more
competent.
As fate would have it, the Han Dynasty came to an end at last,
Though he was firm to fulfill military tasks till he away passed.
