Parting with Two Friends Xue the Sixth And Liu the Eighth
Parting with Two Friends Xue the Sixth And Liu the Eighth
Liu Changqing
All my life I ne’er hoped for an Imperial special-grace decree.
How vain it is to lead a gay life with wine and songs, now I see.
In the bright moonshine o’er the river are flying southward wild
geese;
South of the Huai, shedding leaves on the Chu mountains are
many trees.
Though it is a comfort that I am to settle down near the sea,
Yet to see my hair so hoary in the mirror has much grieved me.
To-day, when older and older, weak and wan, have become we
three,
I’m sorry you two are banished too, though wary you used to be!
