Failing to Find the Hermit of West Hill at Home
Failing to Find the Hermit of West Hill at Home
Qiu Wei
It’s a thatched cottage on top of a mount
Of a height to thirty li to amount.
No boy appears at the knocks from outside;
A peep finds mere desks and the like inside.
If he ins’t going out to cart firewood,
He’s fishing a stream in all likelihood.
We can’t meet each other, as luck’d have it.
In vain are my efforts him to visit.
The grass verdure seen amid the new rains
And pine soughs heard near evening window panes
Help to form a most secluded scene here,
Enough to purify one’s heart and ear.
Though I’m a guest who never his host sees,
I’ve had quite a sense of quiet and peace.
Ready to leave, I’m satisfied indeed.
To wait for that man there is no more need.
