Dreaming of Li Bai,Two Poems
Dreaming of Li Bai, Two Poems
Du Fu
Ⅰ
To part for ever often makes one cry;
To part for a time also makes one sigh.
Miasma prevails south of the river;
There’s no news ’bout you the banished creature.
In my dreams you, my old friend, come to tarry,
For you know you’re ever in my memory.
It does not seem to be your soul of old;
You’re far away, nothing can be foretold.
When your soul comes, green do maple trees grow;
When your soul returns, the pass turns dark so.
Surely you are suffering in the trap,
How can you to come here your wings flap?
My roof beams are filled with setting moonlight;
I think it still shines on your features bright.
Deep is the water, monstrous are the billows;
Let no flood dragons bring you any woes.
Ⅱ
The floating clouds are drifting all the day;
The vagrant’s coming is long in delay.
For three successive nights I have dreamed of you;
Your feeling for me is so deep and true.
You oft looked troubled when you left for home;
You said:“It’s hard indeed for me to come.
Winds and waves will fall on river and lake;
The safety of my boat may be at stake.”
You scratched your hoary-haired head when you went out,
As if your setbacks you’d complain about.
In the capital, officials o’erflow,
But you alone are so wan and sallow.
Who says the net of heaven has large meshes?
When growing old, you are in such distress!
As for your fame that will long, long years last,
It’s a mute thing after you’ve away passed.
